The Center on Integrated Healthcare and Self-Directed Recovery supports the research and training efforts of a national rehabilitation research center focused on improving mental health outcomes for youth and adults diagnosed with serious mental health conditions (SMHCs). In partnership with center PI Dr. Judith Cook at the University of Illinois, Chicago, PI Dr. Klodnick is leading the adaptation of healthy sleep and physical activity interventions (designed for adults with SMCHs) for transition age youth (ages 14-30) who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis and are enrolled in Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) services in Illinois. The adaptation process includes consultation with subject matter experts (including CSC leaders and providers; state administrators) and a lived experience advisory board composed of young people with SMHCs. Drs. Cook and Klodnick are partnering with the State of Illinois FIRST.IL program, a network of 25 CSC programs, to conduct a stepped-wedge trial of providing Fitbits + health sleep and physical activity support sessions delivered by CSC staff. The study leverage state administrative data that CSC programs provide the state that includes clinical, social and behavioral outcomes. Dr. Klodnick and team will also provide training and webinars to support national multidisciplinary team-based efforts to better meet transition-age youth needs around health and wellness.
