People living with HIV (PLWH) are at increased risk of experiencing drug-related overdose, yet no studies in the past 10 years have examined overdose trajectories and risk factors among PLWH.

This quantitative study aims to examine trajectories of overdose incidents, risk, and access to overdose prevention services among PLWH and the impact of individual, social, and structural syndemic risk factors on said trajectories. Using longitudinal, multilevel modelling and interdisciplinary expertise in population health research, this study seeks to provide novel insights into the determinants of overdose risk among PLWH who use drugs.

The project will develop a comprehensive syndemics framework that integrates the socioecological perspective in identifying risk factors across multiple levels. The outcomes of this research will guide targeted interventions to reduce drug overdose risk among high-risk, underserved populations.
