This project addresses the key role that families play within the substance abuse recovery process for teens. Through observation of teens in a sober high school, aspects of family support will be examined to determine their role during the recovery process. Findings will be used as a foundation to a larger grant in the future.

This study will utilize focus groups and individual interviews with 15 family members of students in recovery at University High School in Austin, Texas. Topics to be discussed will include becoming part of the recovery service, barriers and engagement for parents of teens in recovery, family experiences, relationships with parents of teens not in recovery, attending University High school, augmentation of city wide social events for teens and parents, and effective modes of recovery education.

This data will be used as preliminary findings to a larger project. Results will inform the implementation of a Family Engagement Program.
