The Steve Hicks School of Social Work (SHS) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) announced the appointment of Mayan Herman as Clinical Assistant Professor, effective August 16, 2024.
Herman has served for the past two years as an adjunct professor and faculty liaison at SHS. Her new role includes working closely with undergraduates and graduate students in practicum education and teaching social work practice courses.
A resident of Austin since 2016, Herman is passionate about teaching future social workers, with a particular interest in substance misuse, child welfare, immigration, and clinical supervision. She is especially excited about contributing to students’ development through practicum education.
“I love teaching, but I especially love the practicum element because that’s where you grow confidence and learn ethics in real-life social work situations,” Herman said. “I love watching students learn how to advocate for themselves and build creativity by finding their own passions.”
Herman received her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Michigan. As a bilingual clinician (English and Spanish), her practice experience has included a range of populations, ages, and approaches to intervention, which includes counseling, child welfare, and working with those affected by substance use disorders.
“She will add to the many and distinctive contributions made by all members of our faculty, who are essential for the Steve Hicks School to meet its mission as a professional school,” said Allan Cole, Dean of SHS. “I am grateful to members of our search advisory committee: Mary Beer (chair), Yolanda Padilla, Cynthia Franklin, Starla Simmons, and Robin Smith—appreciative of the wisdom, excellent leadership, and diligence that each of them contributed to this search.”
