Mary Mendoza, a school social worker at Weslaco Independent School District, has been selected as the 2015 School Social Worker of the Year.
This award has been established by the Planning Committee of the Annual Texas School Social Workers Conference to recognize excellence in school-based social work practice.
Mendoza, LBSW/MSW, has been a social worker since 1987 and is a 20-year veteran of Weslaco I.S.D. Since 2001, she has served as the Migrant Specialist for the district. Prior to that position, Mendoza was a Parent Specialist and the Director for Safe & Drug Free Schools.
“During her career, Mary has acquired a reputation for developing innovating programs and providing leadership within her community and beyond. As a former migrant student herself, Mary has staved to create support services that target the special needs and challenges faced by migrant students,” said Kathy Armenta, chair of the 24th Annual Texas School Social Worker Conference.
