Social work is a profession that provides opportunities for service to individuals, families and communities in diverse settings such as private agencies, hospitals, schools, private practice and local, state and federal government agencies, including the legislature. Bachelor’s level social workers build careers as caseworkers, school social workers, probation officers, community organizers or program directors. Master’s level social workers have a variety of job titles including agency director, clinical therapist, crisis intervention counselor, trainer/consultant, geriatric specialist, program developer, policy analyst and program administrator.

How do I post a job position with the DiNitto Center?

The DiNitto Career Center offers employers the ability to post jobs directly to students and alumni. We encourage you to register your agency on our Steer Your Career platform. Created with you in mind, this new site provides participating employers the ability to:

  • Post and manage an unlimited number of jobs.
  • Set parameters for your job openings.
  • Receive email reminders when a candidates applies for a job and when your posting is about to expire.
  • Conduct a search of qualified candidates, field resumes, and set up interviews.
  • Register online for our non profit and government career fair.
  • Much more!

All job submissions are reviewed and approved/rejected based upon the information contained in the postings. Postings must adhere to the following criteria:

  • All jobs posted must be career-related/professionally-oriented and require candidates pursuing or already possessing a university degree.
  • All job postings must be paid or salaried. If you have an unpaid internship, please see how to post an unpaid position or contact us.
  • Third-party recruiters (e.g., employment agencies) may post specific positions as long as the hiring client’s info is fully disclosed. Third-party recruiters may not post general advertisement(s) to solicit candidates for their services.
  • In accordance with UT System Regent’s Rules & Regulations, job postings with the following requirements are ineligible (see campus-wide policy here for details):
  1. Positions requiring or asking employees to market products/services on the UT Austin campus. Examples include campus brand ambassador and similar positions.
  2. Fee-based programs. Examples include fee-based training programs, fee-based placements or positions requiring the purchase of supplies or a training kit.
  3. Postings advertising events, services or programs (e.g., career fairs, test prep, etc.).
Can I post unpaid positions?

The DiNitto Center is committed to building partnerships with employers to help students find and fill valuable internship positions. Internships that are posted via the DiNitto Center are not eligible for academic credit.

Agencies that are interested in developing an academic internship program or fill an intern vacancy for a student to receive academic credit should contact the Office of Field Education at or (512) 471-6207. You can also download this informational brochure.

Internship Guidelines

The following guidelines are based on information gathered from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Position Statement on U.S. Internships, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Guidance Letter and the policies of Steve Hicks School of Social Work.

The DiNitto Center welcomes career-related and professionally oriented internships from any social service organization or agency. Internships are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. These are minimum general requirements:

  • The internship must be relevant to the social work profession. We do not accept administrative, clerical or non-professional internships such as receptionist, clerk, wait staff, babysitter/nanny).
  • The internship must assign meaningful projects.
  •  The internship must provide a professional, established working environment with a strong learning component.
What happens after I submit a position listing?

Your job or internship posting is listed in our employment bulletin platform, Steer Your Career. We also publicize your opportunity to students via our weekly Career Services SPOTLIGHT email listserv bulletin. Interested students will contact you directly per instruction in your listing.

Can my organization hold an information session?

The DiNitto Center for Career Services offers two distinct opportunities for your organization to connect directly with our students and alumni:

  • Nonprofit Fair: In the spring semester we host the nonprofit and public agency career fair in conjunction with other career services departments across the campus. This fair offers agencies an opportunity to discuss volunteer, internship and employment opportunities with students, alumni, and the local Austin community.
  • Individual session: The DiNitto Center offers a unique meeting space for agencies that want to hold information sessions or are looking to fill multiple openings. We are available to coordinate and publicize a group or individual interviews for your organization.

What is a community sponsorship?

Can I find volunteers through the DiNitto Center?

We don’t offer this service but the Center for Community Engagement serves as The University of Texas at Austin’s central resource for those interested in volunteerism and service-learning throughout the UT and Austin communities. We encourage you to register your organization and post your volunteer opportunities with them.
