Texas Longhorns head diving coach and five-time U.S. Olympic diving coach Matt Scoggin (BSW ’87) will deliver the keynote address at The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Social Work’s 2026 commencement ceremony.
Scoggin credits his athletics success to the worldview and skills he gained as a social work graduate — making him a natural fit as UT Social Work’s commencement speaker.
“I am deeply honored to be addressing the 2026 graduates of the School of Social Work,” said Coach Matt Scoggin. “A degree in social work is one of the most compassionate, caring degrees on a college campus. These graduates will go on to do meaningful work in service of others, no matter where their career paths lead.”
As director of the Longhorns’ men’s and women’s diving program and head diving coach for more than 30 years, Scoggin has guided divers to 12 NCAA National Championship Team titles, 23 individual NCAA championships and 114 individual conference titles. In addition, Scoggin has led five U.S. Olympic diving teams and was a former U.S. Olympic diver himself, serving as team captain for the U.S. diving team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
“Commencement is a special time in the life of the University and our School, and we’re excited to celebrate this momentous day by bringing one of our distinguished alumni back as our commencement speaker,” said Allan Cole, dean of UT Social Work. “I know he will offer wisdom and challenge to our graduates, along with insights into how a social work degree framed his leadership, coaching, and success. We are filled with gratitude for Coach Scoggin!”
The commencement ceremony will recognize BSW, MSSW and Ph.D. graduates from the School of Social Work, now in its 75th year. The commencement takes place on Saturday, May 9, at Bass Concert Hall.
