Mock disaster drill 5
Social work student providing psychological aid during the drill

For the second consecutive year, social work students joined nursing students at The University of Texas at Austin for all-hazardness preparedness, response and recovery created and implemented by the city of Austin in collaboration with the Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work.

The scenario this year was a gas explosion at DKR Stadium during a home football game –last year it was a tornado hitting a big box store.

Volunteers played the part of victims as well as distressed relatives looking for survivors. The simulation included triage stations where nursing students provided emergency aid, and social work students provided psychological aid to panicked victims and bystanders.

The simulation was monitored by emergency professionals who gauge how well the students respond to the situation.
