International Internships

As the world gets more inter-connected, social workers are increasingly bringing their unique skills, flexible approaches to problem solving, and values of social justice and empowerment to international settings.

The School of Social Work has tackled this international dimension by developing field placements outside the United States for master’s level students. In addition to the integration of theory and practice that is at the core of any field experience, students in international placements are fully immersed in a different culture and have to learn to navigate systems sometimes radically different to those at home. Featured Student Experience: South Africa

Since 2008 the School has placed social work students in agencies in South Africa.  Students selected for these field placements have the opportunity to work in areas such as child welfare, substance abuse treatment, and community advocacy and development. These are reflections from MSSW students who were in South Africa during Spring 2013:

The scope of projects that I was part of  varied from helping a local NGO develop their monitoring and evaluation system, to strategic planning for and evaluation of a national government social development program, to evaluating the impact of an international anti-poverty documentary project. This placement has provided me an unmatched learning opportunity. Kathryn Davis (photo: Kathryn with her field instructor)

Among other tasks, I did a needs assessment and yearly evaluation for our poverty alleviation village, hand-drew maps of the village for the local EMS and police, assisted with clinical/case management despite the fact that my concentration is not clinically focused, and I even tried to implement a new trash/litter system. The best part of it all: in the midst of all these projects I was  able to connect and genuinely engage with the children and families of our community. I learned more than just viable skills, I learned about the profound strength of the human heart.  Christy Camp (photo: Christy with children from her field placement)
