AUSTIN, Texas – The Steve Hicks School of Social Work and the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin are establishing a dual degree program at the graduate level. The dual degree will prepare students to design and manage effective and client-centered human service delivery systems. Graduates of the three-year program will earn the Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) and the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Students can apply for admission for the fall 2019 semester.
Graduates of the dual degree program will combine business skills in core business functional areas — such as accounting, marketing, statistics, communication, and leadership — with social work skills in administration and policy — such as program development, implementation, and evaluation; strategic planning, and human resource development.
“This dual degree responds to an increasing need in the non-profit sector for social work leaders with business and management expertise to lead the complex organizations of today and tomorrow. Likewise, business organizations need leaders with training in human services management, community relations and corporate responsibility,” said Luis H. Zayas, dean of the Steve Hicks School of Social Work.
Dual-degree students must choose the Administration and Policy Practice concentration in the MSSW degree program, and must complete 42 credit hours in social work and 47 credit hours in business.
“The interest MBA students have in using their business skills for social impact is pervasive. We are excited about the knowledge dual degree students will acquire that enables them to influence society across a wide array of organizations. In addition, the integration of social work and MBA students in the classroom will enrich diversity of thought for all students in our programs,” said Stephen Limberg, associate dean for graduate programs at the McCombs School of Business.
