Impact Hour: Immigration and mental health

April 15, 2021 @ 1:00 pm 2:00 pm

Immigration at the Texas Border continues to make headlines, but rarely does the reporting include the words “trauma-informed care.” For this week’s Impact Hour, we are joined by Ana Hernández, program and research coordinator of Girasol (a program at the Steve Hicks School’s Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing), to discuss the role social workers can play in supporting immigrants through trauma-informed care. Through education, training, and direct services, Girasol’s mission is to create a global community of support for the wellbeing of all immigrant families. Ana will share an overview of Girasol Texas projects focused on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of immigrants, as well as updates on the current U.S. policies and opportunities to support the current needs of unaccompanied minors in Texas.
