Nanette Stokes-Stephens, Ph.D.

Research Scientist

Nanette Stephens is a licensed clinical psychologist and research scientist with the School of Social Work’s Health Behavior Research and Training Institute. She has over 18 years of experience integrating the Transtheoretical Model and Motivational Interviewing (MI) principles and strategies in her work as a trainer, supervisor, researcher, clinician and consultant. Dr. Stephens participated in the first Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) workshop which was conducted by William Miller and Steve Rollnick, as well as in the first Motivational Interviewing Supervisor’s Training (MIST), presented by William Miller and Theresa Moyers.  She was a therapist in several federally funded MI-based projects (e.g., Project MATCH, TTM Group Therapy for Cocaine, fetal alcohol syndrome prevention SUCCESS and CHOICES projects), and she currently provides training, consultation, and coaching services for a variety of other health behavior studies and projects.  Dr. Stephens has conducted numerous MI workshops for a wide variety of agencies and programs (e.g., the Austin-Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Agency, Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston, Texas Department of State Health Services, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and Harris County Hospital District SBIRT/InSIGHT.  Her other clinical and research interest have included working with families with histories of domestic violence and child maltreatment.  Dr. Stephens’ publications include journal articles and chapters on MI, substance abuse group interventions, domestic violence, services for families in battered women’s shelters, and treating behavior problems in children of battered women.   Dr. Stephens served as board president of The Gathering Place, a psychosocial clubhouse for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, and was a member of the Star of Hope Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Advisory Council.

Professional Interests

Developing, training, implementing and evaluating interventions based on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) constructs and processes. Consulting, coaching, supervising the utilization of individual and group-based applications of MI and the TTM in mental health, substance use, and health-care settings.
