Clara Pope Willoughby Centennial Professor in Criminal Justice
Michael Lauderdale, Ph.D., is the Clara Pope Willoughby Centennial Professor in Criminal Justice at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, where he teaches courses on organizations, leadership, social change and criminal justice.
Lauderdale is also the principal investigator of the Institute for Organizational Excellence, which evolved from his long established research program assessing organizational functioning and effectiveness. Since 1975 he has worked with the State of Texas to develop tools and procedures to improve services of state agencies. This work is based on previous work that he had done in the Southwest, Mexico, and Europe.
Since 2000, Lauderdale has increased his research and service on the topic of leadership, working in particular with law enforcement entities. Under the sponsorship of the Greater Austin Crime Commission in collaboration with The University of Texas at Austin Varsity Athletics Department, he initiated the Longhorn Leaders program, which has demonstrated to be effective in improving middle school students’ success in the Austin area.
Lauderdale was born in Oklahoma and educated at the University of Oklahoma and Penn State University. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1970, having previously taught at the University of Oklahoma, New Mexico State University, the University of Texas at El Paso. Lauderdale and his wife, Camille, have a son, Gregory and a daughter, Marisa. His interests include serving on many community boards and using computers for forecasting.
