Social work student Marisa Swanson is part of the 12-member task force that will help decide the fate of statues of Confederate leaders at UT Austin. The task force includes students, faculty, alumni, and administrators, and has an Aug. 1 deadline to turn over recommendations to President Fenves.

Fenves convened the group after thousands signed an online petition calling on the university to remove a statue honoring Confederate leader Jefferson Davis. The Davis statue and two others honoring Conferederate leaders were tagged earlier this week with red spray-painted “Black Lives Matter.”

Swanson, a senior in the School of Social Work and College of Liberal Arts, is the president of the Social Work Council and a member of the Senate of College Councils.
