Clinical Assistant Professor
Mary Beer is a lecturer in the graduate and undergraduate social work programs at The University of Texas at Austin. She is a graduate of the School of Social Work, class of 2001. She has been a school social worker for sixteen years. She has worked in inner-city schools in Newark, New Jersey, a private preparatory school in New Jersey, and with over 20 schools in Austin. She works with children and youth ages 4-20 and is a member of the district’s crisis-response team.
She began her career as a houseparent and shift supervisor in residential treatment centers and dabbled in medical social work for about a year. Mary uses SFT, CBT, motivational interviewing, play therapy, and sand tray with her clients. Most recently, she has become a Trust Based Relational Intervention practitioner. Mary has provided workshops on the topics of TBRI, compassion fatigue, sex education, drop-out prevention programs, school ethics, non-suicidal self injury, suicide prevention, and group-based interventions.
She is licensed by the state of Texas as an LCSW and is a board-approved supervisor. She is a member of NASW and the School Social Work Association of America.
In her free time she likes to walk her dogs, hike, run, and read.
