Welcome to the site for the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. Whether you are considering an undergraduate major (BSW), a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW), or a Ph.D., you will find many of your questions answered on this site. And, of course, you are invited to visit the school personally or contact us.
Once you have been introduced to our many educational programs, we are sure the School of Social Work will be among your first choices. Our school is ranked in the top ten schools of social work in the country and members of our faculty are leaders in their respective fields. They bring to the classroom countless years of professional experience. We are proud to count among us professors who have won distinguished teaching and mentoring awards. Members of our faculty are regularly invited to lecture at national and international conferences, learned societies, and schools and universities around the globe. They are at work on changing the world.
In addition to dynamic classes and exciting hands-on experience in your fieldwork assignment, you will find at our school a faculty that is conducting research to solve contemporary social problems. At the heart of this research and scholarship is the drive to push the boundaries of knowledge on, for example, intervening with clients and human service organizations; on organizing and improving the social, health, and mental health services to diverse communities; on preventing and treating many of the social ills in our country and abroad; and on assisting communities, youth, and families to develop and flourish. There are many more far-reaching areas of scholarship and research that our faculty is pursuing. This is just a sampling. You can learn more about our faculty’s scholarship by following the links to their individual profiles and reading these research stories.
As a student of social work, you will feel the vitality that our teaching, research, and community service generate. You can be sure that you will be challenged intellectually. We will urge you to envision ways that you can help solve or prevent social problems. We want you to dream, and to dream big, about what the world should be and what you can do about it. But you won’t be alone. Our faculty, staff, and administration will guide, support, mentor, and nourish your learning. At the School of Social Work you will discover a compassionate, vibrant community of people deeply committed to preparing professionals to tackle the social problems of our time and to conducting research to face the challenges of tomorrow.
